Are you in on the digital signature 4-1-1?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

In this day and age, it’s customary to check out a product online before buying it, and user reviews tend to come in especially handy during this process. Indeed, getting the 4-1-1 on another person’s experience with a product or solution before adopting it for yourself may greatly impact your decision.

If you’re considering implementing digital signatures, you’d probably be interested in finding out what people who are (and aren’t) using them have to say about it. Fortunately, AIIM – a leading authority in the field of document management and workflow automation – has made it easy to get this information with their recent, first-of-its-kind research entitled Digital Signatures for Document Workflow and SharePoint. In surveying digital signature users and non-users alike, they report on the perceived and actual benefits of the digital signing technology, and inquire on topics like how prevalent formal signatures are in day-to-day business activities for organizations from various industries.

One question AIIM posed in the survey was: Would you say that more than 50% of the main business processes/documents in your organizational unit require formal signatures?

In the graph above, you can see that in the ‘Engineering & Construction’, and ‘Professional services, Legal and Media’ industries, a good amount of processes rely on obtaining signature approvals. What does this imply in terms of digital signatures? If you’d like to know, you can download AIIM’s study for free and find out. Enjoy!

Behind Every Successful Drug Lies a Digital Signature

Monday, April 26th, 2010

It’s pretty fascinating to think of the different ways we use digital signatures in our lives. From electronically signing a mail delivery that’s just arrived at our doorstep, to digitally signing off on bank transactions via our home computer. Businesses also use digital signatures in a variety of ways. Take CROs (clinical research organizations) for example; CROs are always coming up with new drugs to cure illnesses, and conducting studies and clinical trials in order to get these drugs approved as quickly as possible. In order to initiate these processes, signature authorizations from remotely-located parties must be obtained in the quickest and most effective way possible. With digital signatures, CROs are able to more quickly obtain the approvals they need to initiate studies, and keep them moving forward swiftly and efficiently.

A recent press release entitled Digital Signatures Provide Competitive Advantage for Top 10 CROs takes a deeper look into how some of the world’s top 10 CROs apply digital signatures, and the benefits they obtain from doing so. Even if your profession is as far from clinical research as New York City is from Hong Kong, learning about the ways CROs use digital signatures to enjoy benefits like expedited business processes and reduced costs may just give you some ideas on how you could do the same at your organization.

New and Exciting Ways to Go Paperless

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

I’m excited to share an article that I greatly enjoyed called The Complete Guide to Going Paperless, which was published online at Lifehacker.com – one of the most popular online blogs. Instead of going into an overly-technical and somewhat boring analysis of ways to eliminate the use of paper, the bloggers at Lifehacker took a look into the paper that people like you and me encounter on a regular basis (like unwanted advertising catalogues we find in the mail, and grocery lists we write up without thinking twice) and suggest really cool ways to lose the paper without losing the information.

The Complete Guide to Going Paperless offers a lot of helpful tips on ways to easily eliminate paper from our lives, and also provides links to a bunch of cool organizations that can help us along the way. For example, did you know that there’s an organization out there that will plant not one, not two, but FIVE trees in your name just for letting them help you go paperless? Be sure you check out how some Twitter-goers go paperless in the tweets at the end of the article, too. Some of their methods may take you by surprise!
