It’s pretty exciting
that more and more healthcare providers in the U.S. are switching from paper to electronic health records (EHRs). Of course, there are more than a handful of reasons to explain this – reasons that extend far beyond government incentives. Potential benefits to patient care from EHRs are many, among them quicker access to patient information from any location, the elimination of redundant testing, and even easier chronic disease management. There’s also the appealing cost savings for health care providers. But what about the benefits for our planet?
A CBS News article entitled Will electronic health records save the planet? discusses the benefits that electronic health records can have for Earth. It reports that EHRs can decrease carbon dioxide emissions, eliminate the use of more than 1,000 tons of paper for medical charts, and also reduce the use of toxic chemicals.
