EHRs benefit more than patients and health care providers

Friday, May 27th, 2011

It’s pretty exciting that more and more healthcare providers in the U.S. are switching from paper to electronic health records (EHRs). Of course, there are more than a handful of reasons to explain this – reasons that extend far beyond government incentives. Potential benefits to patient care from EHRs are many, among them quicker access to patient information from any location, the elimination of redundant testing, and even easier chronic disease management. There’s also the appealing cost savings for health care providers. But what about the benefits for our planet?

A CBS News article entitled Will electronic health records save the planet? discusses the benefits that electronic health records can have for Earth. It reports that EHRs can decrease carbon dioxide emissions, eliminate the use of more than 1,000 tons of paper for medical charts, and also reduce the use of toxic chemicals. Now that’s some pretty exciting stuff! Check out the CBS News article to learn more about how EHRs are benefitting a healthier planet.

Paperless Clinical Trial Study Examined by U.S. Government Officials

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

I recently found a very interesting article on HealthcareIT News that reports on a study involving the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program. The study explores how digital identities, digital signatures, and cloud computing accelerate clinical trials and lower costs, and it was reportedly examined by government officials around the Obama administration’s new National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace initiative.

The article highlights how digital signatures “guarantee the integrity of documents…by protecting every bit of information from being changed.” In the study, electronic documents were being stored in the “cloud,” enabling researchers to access the information quickly and securely and authorize the documents using digital signatures. This eliminated the need for sending physical documents via courier service or fax solely for the purpose of obtaining signature approvals, thus expediting processes and significantly reducing costs. Digital Signature use in Healthcare

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

What happens when an organization with 17 different offices, which handles upwards of 10,000 paper documents a day, takes their workflow digital? If you’re interested in finding out, you’re welcome to check out this case study on the South Carolina Department of Mental Health’s (SCDMH) use of digital signatures.

As digital signature use in Healthcare grows, the SCDMH (a comprehensive mental Healthcare provider) joins other organizations in the industry that have discovered the huge benefit that digital signatures provide – from the level of greater customer satisfaction to improved organizational efficiency. Aside from the $4 million that the SCDMH saved in only the first year of implementing digital signatures, they have gained secure and compliant electronic approval processes that cut process times, eliminate paper-related expenditures, and significantly improve collaboration. They’ve even become more environmentally friendly – according to Pay It Green, the amount of paper SCDMH saves annually due to digital signatures equates to over 11,000 trees!

If you’re interested in hearing about digital signature use in Healthcare from professionals in the field, register for a free webinar called Digital Signatures for Healthcare, which takes place on July 21st at 2:00PM EDT.
